Integrating a Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach Within Your Counseling Practice
Description: This presentation will describe benefits of integrating neurodiversity-affirming approaches and strategies within school-based counseling practices. The presenters will discuss critiques from the autistic community about the potentially harmful impact of interventions, grounded in the medical model of disability, that attempt to make autistic and other neurodivergent individuals appear or behave more "normal.” They will then discuss how practitioners can integrate neurodiversity- affirming counseling techniques and strategies into their practice to better support neurodivergent students and build on their strengths to help them thrive.
Learner Objectives This session will help participants:
Describe the benefits of using neurodiversity-affirming counseling techniques.
Identify how to integrate neurodiversity-affirming approaches and strategies within their current school-based counseling practices.
Critically evaluate whether therapeutic curricula and resources are neurodiversity affirming.
