This session will review comprehensive assessment techniques for racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse students. The presenter will describe how PASS theory can be used to promote fair and equitable cognitive assessment and guide intervention. Understanding how a student thinks as opposed to what they know is an important step in reducing bias and performing equitable assessment. The presenter will examine equitable assessment and identification of disabilities as well as assessment of students who are learning English. Case studies of PASS profiles, comparisons to achievement using the discrepancy consistency method, and interventions will be provided.
Learner Objectives This session will help participants:
- Examine and evaluate their own current assessment practice in the context of cognitive assessment of diverse populations based on the "Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing."
- Understand how measuring thinking versus knowing leads to a better understanding of students and leads to fairer assessment.
- Apply PASS theory to inform identification of disabilities and development of interventions for diverse learners.
