While every state has a slightly (or substantially) different IEP form and process, the requirements for transition assessment and services are based in federal law and regulations. Learn the basics of transition assessment including the definition, components, sample tools, and expected outcomes of a comprehensive process. The presenter will offer detailed descriptions of tools and techniques unique to transition assessment, including a walk-through of tools for evaluating self-determination skills, adaptive behavior and independent living skills, vocational interests and skills, career exploration and college planning skills, and additional related tools that are often used for the first time with transition-age students.

    Learner Objectives

    This session will help participants:
    1. Explain the federal requirements for transition assessment, postsecondary goals, and services to professionals, parents, and students.
    2. Conduct a needs assessment for transition-age students to determine key areas to assess as part of a comprehensive transition assessment process.
    3. Select assessment tools that meet requirements for assessment across transition planning areas and the needs of the wide range of students within their system.
