Climate is the atmosphere on the school campus or classroom. It can be positive and inviting or negative and uninviting—or somewhere in between. Do students want to be there? Are they able to learn? When students enter each day into a positive and welcoming climate that provides meaningful engagement, there are a multitude of positive effects—from reducing behavioral concerns to increasing student attendance and motivation to learn. In this webinar, our presenter will help educators consider practical ways that they can consciously construct an invitational school/classroom climate and ways they can boost student engagement.
Learner Objectives This session will help participants:
- Use the concept of ratios of interaction to establish a positive and welcoming environment and identify specific strategies to boost noncontingent and contingent positive interactions.
- Identify classroom active engagement strategies that increase the opportunity for all students to participate, be a part of a classroom team of learners, and experience feelings of competence in learning activities.
- Identify a variety of intervention programs, clubs, and activities that can be developed to help all students experience belongingness and connectedness in school.
