This webinar will review some of the most common ethical and legal issues currently experienced by school psychologists. The presenters will discuss issues related to confidentiality, record keeping, and privileged communication. They will provide examples of common ethical dilemmas related to confidentiality and dive into various types of student records and when disclosure is required. An analysis of how privileged communication differs from confidentiality and how to be mindful of privilege in school psychology practice will also be discussed.

    Learner Objectives

    This session will help participants:

    1. Apply ethical decision making in challenging situations related to confidentiality (and its limits) in school settings.
    2. Understand how to engage in responsible record keeping as dictated by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), including when disclosure of records is required.
    3. Explain privileged communication as it relates to the practice of school psychology.
