    Parental substance use places children at risk for a wide range of adverse outcomes along the developmental continuum. Through interactive lecture and case discussions, participants will identify school and community supports and strength-based approaches to bolster students’ social support and coping skills to promote more positive outcomes. This session is sponsored by the Convention Committee.

    Learning Objectives:
    This session will help participants

    1. describe the short- and long-term effects of parental substance use on students’ physical, psychological, social–emotional, and behavioral functioning;
    2. identify strength-based interventions and school and community supports to promote students’ protective factors; and
    3. examine how diversity influences beliefs about substance use and access to community-based supports.
