Equitable Cognitive Assessment Demands Socially Just Solutions: Choose Wisely
A historical overview of current research on cognitive tests will be examined. The difference between test bias and test equity will reveal which tests are most equitable. Topics included: (a) what different cognitive tests measure, (b) COVID-19’s influence on scores, (c) intelligence test correlations with achievement, (d) profiles for exceptional students, (e) research-based interventions, and (f) equitable identification of students with specific learning disability using a method consistent with IDEA. Emphasis on equitable measures that are culturally appropriate, easily explained, strengths-based, time-efficient, and address representative of marginalized groups (e.g., gifted and intellectual disability). Learner Objectives: Participants will learn how to: 1. Select the most equitable tests based on the research summary that will be provided. 2. Identify cognitive tests that require knowledge and create a threat to fair assessment. 3. Apply the concept of equity to the assessment of students with intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and the gifted.
