Prepandemic, public preschool exclusionary discipline practices indicated risks for later child mental health. Research indicates distance learning effects during COVID-19 increased the need for post-return social–emotional support. This session provides a brief overview of early childhood social–emotional influences, introducing an evidence-based MTSS framework with racial equity enhancements. Strategies for creating safe, predictable learning environments, methods of addressing challenging behaviors in the early years, and tools for data-based decision-making will be shared.
Learner Objectives This session will help participants:
- Understand the foundations of evidence-based MTSS supporting emotional development in early childhood.
- Describe evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring tools for early childhood social–emotional and mental health needs.
- Apply culturally relevant and sustaining strategies to respond to challenging behaviors in early childhood settings.
