Prepandemic, public preschool exclusionary discipline practices indicated risks for later child mental health. Research indicates distance learning effects during COVID-19 increased the need for post-return social–emotional support. This session provides a brief overview of early childhood social–emotional influences, introducing an evidence-based MTSS framework with racial equity enhancements. Strategies for creating safe, predictable learning environments, methods of addressing challenging behaviors in the early years, and tools for data-based decision-making will be shared.

    Learner Objectives

    This session will help participants:
    1. Understand the foundations of evidence-based MTSS supporting emotional development in early childhood.
    2. Describe evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring tools for early childhood social–emotional and mental health needs.
    3. Apply culturally relevant and sustaining strategies to respond to challenging behaviors in early childhood settings.

1 Documented CPD Credits/Hours   NASP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NASP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
