Recent prevalence rates note that in a postpandemic world, eating disorders among children and adolescents have substantially increased. Thus, when working with the school-age population, school psychologists greatly benefit from having a background in eating disorders, as they are a likely concern practitioners will encounter in their practice. This presentation will review common childhood eating disorders symptoms and risk factors, discuss common evidence-based treatment methods, and explore the school psychologist’s role in collaborating with other professionals to provide care.
Learner Objectives This session will help participants:
- Describe how ethical, school-based eating disorder support fits into a comprehensive role as outlined by the NASP Practice Model.
- Describe diagnostic criteria, common warning signs, and typical course of treatment for individuals impacted by eating disorders.
- Apply strategies to provide school-based support to students and families undergoing eating disorder treatment.
