School psychologists often operate in environments with restrictive laws or unsupportive community attitudes toward LGBTQ+ youth. This presentation provides school psychologists with the language and resources to be effective advocates for these students. This webinar examines language around LGBTQ+ identification, offers tips for navigating ethical and legal constraints, provides guidance for talking with others about these issues, and explores a case study addressing a transgender student’s social transition at school. Participants will leave with extensive examples and resources for supporting LGBTQ+ students in their communities.

This session will help participants

Employ effective communication strategies for discussing LGBTQ+ issues with families, educators, and community leaders.
Address common misconceptions and legislative challenges to advocate for the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ students.
Balance their own ethical and legal obligations while supporting LGBTQ+ students in a school setting.
