    This workshop provides an overview of how trauma can affect the school community. By adopting a “trauma lens,” adults working with students are better able to recognize signs of trauma as well as develop effective school-wide and classroom-based strategies for creating a supportive environment for students. In addition, adults who work with students exposed to trauma learn the importance of developing a self-care plan to prevent and reduce stress in their lives.

    Learner Objectives:
    This session will help participants
    1. increase their knowledge of the impact of trauma on students, including biological, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms;
    2. increase their capacity to explain the importance of adopting a trauma lens for educators and explain specific manifestations and strategies for helping teachers to integrate this lens into their practices;
    3. learn about best practices for interventions aimed at addressing the effects of trauma for students in a school setting; and
    4. understand the importance of school–community partnerships for delivering trauma-informed services to meet the needs of students and families.
