The A-B-C charting approach, while commonly used for collecting real-time observational data, can often be incorrect in the delineation of pertinent antecedents and consequences of problem behavior. This workshop will describe a more effective alternative direct observation technique for identifying the function of problem behavior: trigger analysis with behavioral description. Simulations conducted by the presenter will allow participants to practice during the session and build skills. This presentation is relevant to both school psychologists and board certified behavior analysts.
Learner Objectives: This workshop will help participants
delineate the flaws in the often-used A-B-C descriptive charting system;
identify the motivational condition for the following access functions: attention, peer attention, and tangible reinforcers;
identify the motivational condition for the following escape functions: unpleasant social situations, lengthy tasks, difficult tasks, aversive physical stimuli; and
complete a form for trigger analysis with behavioral description, for the wide diversity of problems and students encountered in public schools.
