Schools are charged with creating safe environments for all youth which help to promote learning and socio-emotional development. The Human Right Campaign’s 2018 Youth Survey Report continues to show that “the majority of LBGTQ youth…still experience negative and even hostile school environments.” Research continuously demonstrates the positive impact a school Gender-Sexuality-Alliance (GSA) can have not just on LGBTQ+ youth, but on school climate and for all students. School psychologists can play a pivotal role in facilitating and supporting GSAs.

    Learning Objectives:
    Participants will be able to:
    1. discuss the importance of school GSA’s in creating safe, inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ youth.
    2. describe how GSA’s align with NASP’s Safe and Supportive Schools for LGBTQ+ Youth Position Statement and Affirmative Practices.
    3. effectively advocate for, plan, and ultimately supervise/facilitate strong GSAs.
