Participants will learn about the underlying cultural, social, and contextual issues that affect the academic, behavior, and mental health of urban students. They also will learn culturally responsive practices that support and enhance students’ academic and social–emotional potential, promote strengths and protective factors, and foster resiliency.
    Learner Objectives:
    This session will help participants
    1. describe how poverty negatively affects the schooling process for low-income students,
    2. incorporate trauma-informed practices that assist urban students who are experiencing stress and improve behavioral difficulties, and
    3. use culturally responsive practices to improve the academic achievement of urban students.
