Increasing Family Support to Build Healthy Futures for LGBTQ Students
This session provides a research-based framework to help families to decrease rejection and risks and increase connectedness and support for LGBTQ students experiencing pandemic-related loss of school and external supports. Learner Objectives: This session will help participants: 1. discuss the role of family acceptance and rejection of LGBTQ students on their health and well-being and Family Acceptance Project (FAP) evidence-based strategies and resources to help families to decrease rejection and health risks and increase family support and connectedness for their LGBTQ children. 2. describe specific family behaviors that contribute to increased health risks for LGBTQ students, including suicidality, substance abuse, depression and HIV, and family behaviors that protect against risk and promote well-being. 3. discuss ways to apply FAP’s family-support approach to decrease rejection and increase family connectedness and acceptance within school communities.
