Almost every child will experience the death of someone close to them during their childhood. The disruption caused by their loss is often complicated by exposure to traumatic events, secondary losses, and lack of perceived support. School psychologists play a vital role in helping teachers understand the unique grief experiences of children, recognize how grief impacts learning and development, start a conversation with grieving students, and develop a grief-sensitive classroom.
This session will help participants:
Identify five factors which can influence the experience of grieving students.
Describe three effective strategies which teachers can use for starting a conversation with a grieving student.
Analyze factors which may prevent a teacher from developing a grief-sensitive classroom and generate five solutions to address these challenges.
