Reframing IDEA: Strength-Based, Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches to Eligibility
Special education eligibility under IDEA often uses deficit-based language, influencing how school psychologists perceive and describe students in evaluations and reports. This session presents a strength-based and neurodiversity-affirming reframe of all 13 IDEA eligibility categories. We will provide actionable language that highlights student abilities and unique learning styles, moving beyond a focus on limitations. Participants will learn how this affirming shift can improve student-centered decision-making, enhance family and staff collaboration, and foster a more inclusive culture. The session offers practical tools for immediate integration into your assessment and report writing practice.
This session will help participants:
Describe how deficit-based language in IDEA eligibility influences perceptions and special education practices based on the current research.
Apply strength-based and neurodiversity-affirming reframes for all 13 IDEA eligibility categories to their evaluation reports in a manner that is legally compliant.
Identify tangible evidence-based strategies to introduce strength-based, neurodiversity-affirming language into their evaluations, IEP meetings, and direct work with students and families.
