The increase in the number of students who are underserved (ELL, twice exceptional, culturally diverse, and economically disadvantaged) and their underrepresentation in gifted programs indicate a greater need to advocate for best practices in gifted identification in our schools. Using MTSS or a modified test/place model are the perfect solutions. Presentation topics include: Description of existing gifted assessment practices, factors perpetuating the under-identification problem, and best practices for identification.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- identify the needs of underserved gifted students
- describe factors perpetuating the under-identification problem
- identify assessment approaches to identify underserved gifted populations
- discuss best practices for identifying underserved gifted students
