This workshop focuses on the DBT STEPS (Strategies, Techniques, Evidence-Based Programs, and Supports), a curriculum that provides adolescents with skill development and practice in the area of emotion regulation, decision making, and distress tolerance using an upstream approach to prevent and reduce the number of adolescents who engage in self-harming behavior. Most SEL programs for adolescents do not focus on skills for emotional dysregulation. This workshop will provide participants with the background and application of selected dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills for helping adolescents manage their emotions and behavioral difficulties.
This session will help participants
1. learn selected skills from each of the modules of the DBT STEPS—A Curriculum that are designed for universal implementation,
2. learn the implementation strategies for each selected skill and the rationale for including them in the curriculum, and
3. identify and apply the implementation structure of the DBT skills that meets the needs of their specific school-based setting.
